Drug gangs in Sosua - Local Priest says authorities must step in
Local priest, Bernardo Vásquez last week called out to authorities to do something about the rise in drug related crimes in Sosua.
Vásquez , of the Church San Antonio de Padua said local residents are "alarmed and fearful," because "drug trafficking has taken control of Sosua,” and “there are places the police do not dare to enter.”
He also said that people are so scared at the moment that he has to end church at 8pm, because people are afraid to be outside after that time.
He made mention of the shootout that took place on Sunday 25th May around Sosua in the Los Charamicos sector and carried on to Montellano which was said to be drugs related and resulted in at least two deaths and over 300 bullets fired.
"It looked like Vietnam," he said.
He also said that drug use, drug trafficking and confrontations between rival drug gangs has now replaced the main activity Sosua is known for, which should be tourism.
He said that everyone knows what is happening here as it’s out in the open, but “what is needed is that the authorities put their pants on,” and take on the responsibility to clean up the area.
