20 people dead after largest bus crash in Dominican history
At least 20 people died last Friday after two buses collided head-on along the La Romana-Higuey highway in the La Altagracia province in the East of the Dominican Republic.
Emergency services coordinator Colonel Juan Manuel Mendez Garcia told the press that 15 Dominicans and six Italian tourists died, and there were 24 persons injured, although other press reports differ in exactly how many died.
The tragic crash occurred when an FL Tours bus carrying 23 foreign tourists, 19 of them Italians, collided with a bus carrying around 50 Dominicans. A small pickup truck was also involved in the accident.
The crash is believed to be one of the worst in Dominican history. Shocking video footage taken shortly after the crash shows rescue workers retrieving bodies and body parts from the wreckage.
Apparently, regional bus transporters had been on strike the week before to complain about the poor state of the road and the increased traffic from growing tourism in the area.
