Fay kills 4 in the Dominican Republic and 50 in Haiti
Four people were killed by Trocal Storm “Fay” last week as it passed over the Dominican Republic.
Thirteen year old Alexandra Castillo, her five year-old brother Alexis along with their 34 year-old mother, Esther Jiménez Almonte drowned when they tried to cross the swollen "Chau Chau" river in their truck.
The father, Evaristo Calderón was able to swim to safety.
Some 12,215 people had to leave their homes in the Dominican Republic and 3443 homes and seven bridges were damaged by the storm.
Haiti suffered even more fatalities, with the BBC reporting that at least 50 people were killed when a bus as swept away by fast flowing Glace river in the south-west of the country. Only around thirty people from among the 80 passengers survived, when the bus overturned as it tried to cross a bridge over the swollen river.
Before Fay hit Cuba's southern coast on Sunday afternoon, officials in four Cuban provinces ordered the evacuation of more than 10,000 people from low-lying areas, along with tourists staying at coastal resorts in the storm's path.
The US National Hurricane center (NHC) said maximum sustained winds were nearly 85km/h (50mph), possibly rising up to 120km/h, and a hurricane watch was now in effect for the Florida Keys and along the southern and western coast of the Florida mainland.
In the Florida Keys authorities closed schools, opened shelters and urged visitors to leave. The main highway linking the Keys to the mainland was choked with traffic on Sunday afternoon, local police said.
Forecasters said Fay could hit the U.S. as a Category 1 or 2 hurricane, with winds perhaps reaching more than 100 mph (160 kph).
Back here in the Dominican Republic, Colonel Juan Manuel Méndez García, the Center for Emergency Operations (COE), director, explained that even though the main storm has passed, there is still a Red Alert in place for Ázua, and a Yellow Alert for the National District, Santo Domingo, Puerto Plata, San Juan de la Maguana, Valverde, Santiago Rodríguez, Montecristi, Pedernales, Independencia, Bahoruco, Elías Piña and San José de Ocoa, La Altagracia (Higuey), La Romana, el Seibo, Hato Mayor, San Pedro de Macorís, Monte Plata, Santiago , Monsignor Nouel, La Vega, Sánchez Ramírez, Samaná, Maria Trinidad Sánchez, San Cristóbal, Dajabón, Espaillat, Hermanas Mirabal, and Duarte.
