Police arrested a local resident, Ralph Brian Thorogood Baker last week in conjunction with INTERPOL. British and international police were searching for a man accused of various crimes particularly involving children, and a photo suggested that Mr Baker was the wanted man.
But after he was arrested and taken to Santo Domingo for questioning, police realized they had the wrong man. The deteriorating photo of the criminal’s face did not match Mr Baker’s, and the photo showed a facial scar which Mr Baker did not have.
Mr Baker later told reporters, “I’ve been living in the Dominican Republic for several years, have a cedula, and have never had any problems with the law.”
“ I spent all day handcuffed, but after police reviewed all the information and sent to England, they informed me that I was not the person they were looking for and was free to leave.
Mr Baker said he received good treatment and that at the end of the afternoon he was taken to the local Caribbean Tours bus station where he was able to get a bus back to Puerto Plata.
