Thieves who stole an SUV and then broke into another vehicle to steel a laptop and TV camera faced more than they bargained for last week (8th Oct).
The vehicle they broke into in Punta Goleta (Cabarete) to acquire the laptop belonged to local TV program and newspaper journalist Junior Henríquez who was working in Cabarete along with his colleague Junior Vargas.
He was able to call the police and the three robbers were chased while trying to make their escape toward Sosua in a stolen Mitsubishi Montero Sport.
Gunshots were fired during the chase near Sosua resulting in serious injuries for three innocent bystanders. Passer-by Jenny Lopez received a wound, 22 year-old Jose Peralta was shot in the arm, and 38 year-old Oscar Quintana received a bullet in the head, resulting in the loss of an eye.
Two close-by cars were also damaged by stray bullets.
Police and troops from the Northern Air Command put up a road-block and were finally able to stop the stolen Mitsubishi at Cangrejo, between Sosua and Puerto Plata, where the three runaways, Eugenio Peña Arias, Henry Quintana de la Cruz and Luis Ricardo Madè Beltrán were apprehended.
A local resident was on hand and able to video the arrest – which you can see on YouTube.
The video shows police hitting the apprehended men with their pistols.
The three responsible were jailed last Thursday for 3 months, pending further sentencing.
